
Burn Ban Begins June 15 in Unincorporated Skagit County
Effective June 15, 2026
Skagit County has announced a modified burn ban for all residential and land-clearing fires in unincorporated areas of the county beginning at 12:01 A.M. on June 15, 2026.
The burn ban will remain in effect until further notice due to current and forecasted weather conditions that increase wildfire risk.
What’s Prohibited
Beginning June 15:
Residential burning is prohibited
Land-clearing fires are prohibited
Existing burn permits are suspended
No new permits will be issued during the burn ban
What’s Still Allowed
Recreational and cooking fires are still permitted only when proper safety requirements are followed.
Allowed fires must:
Be no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high
Use only:
Charcoal
Seasoned firewood
Propane-fueled fire pits
Required Safety Rules
All recreational fires must comply with the following:
Fires must be inside an enclosure:
At least 14 inches high
No wider than 3 feet
Constructed of cement block, stone, or #10-gauge steel
Burning material must remain below the top edge of the enclosure
Keep one of the following nearby at all times:
A charged garden hose
Two 5-gallon buckets of water
Portable fire pits must be:
At least 15 feet from structures or combustible materials
Recreational fires must be:
At least 25 feet from trees, branches, brush, or other combustibles
Someone age 16 or older must always be present to monitor and extinguish the fire if necessary
Additional Restrictions May Apply
ALL outdoor burning — including recreational fires — is prohibited if:
A National Weather Service “Red Flag Warning” is issued
The Northwest Clean Air Agency issues a Stage 1 or Stage 2 Air Quality Burn Ban
Residents within incorporated city or town limits should check directly with their local fire department for any additional restrictions.
