SR 20 washout repairs
Work continues to rebuild and repair SR 20 in several areas between Canyon Creek Trailhead (milepost 142) and Granite Creek (milepost 148) after December washouts. The North Cascades Highway is expected to fully reopen between Ross Dam Trailhead (milepost 134) and Porcupine Creek (milepost 156) by June 25.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced that SR 20, the North Cascades Highway, is now expected to reopen by Friday, June 19, 2026—approximately one week earlier than the previously announced target date of June 25.

Crews have been working seven days a week since mid-May to repair extensive washout and roadway damage between Canyon Creek Trailhead and the Granite Creek area. Major repairs included rebuilding roadway embankments, restoring damaged pavement and shoulders, repairing drainage systems, and replacing guardrails and barriers.

Final work now underway includes:

  • Paving and pavement finishing

  • Installing lane striping and reflective markings

  • Replacing guardrails

  • Shoulder grading

  • Erosion control and landscaping

WSDOT cautions that the reopening date remains dependent on favorable weather conditions and the successful completion of final safety work.

Crews continue to repair several severely damaged sections of SR 20 between Canyon Creek Trailhead and Granite Creek. North Cascades Highway remains closed between Ross Dam Trailhead (milepost 140) and Porcupine Creek (milepost 156) until that work finishes.

Road Remains Closed Until Reopening

Until the highway officially reopens, the closure area between Ross Dam Trailhead (MP 134) and Porcupine Creek (MP 156) remains an active construction zone.

No public access is permitted within the closure area, including:

  • Cyclists

  • Hikers

  • Campers

  • Other recreational users

WSDOT has emphasized that crews continue working seven days a week to complete repairs and safely reopen this important transportation corridor.
