North Cascades Highway Expected to Reopen by June 19

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced that SR 20, the North Cascades Highway, is now expected to reopen by Friday, June 19, 2026—approximately one week earlier than the previously announced target date of June 25.
Crews have been working seven days a week since mid-May to repair extensive washout and roadway damage between Canyon Creek Trailhead and the Granite Creek area. Major repairs included rebuilding roadway embankments, restoring damaged pavement and shoulders, repairing drainage systems, and replacing guardrails and barriers.
Final work now underway includes:
Paving and pavement finishing
Installing lane striping and reflective markings
Replacing guardrails
Shoulder grading
Erosion control and landscaping
WSDOT cautions that the reopening date remains dependent on favorable weather conditions and the successful completion of final safety work.

Road Remains Closed Until Reopening
Until the highway officially reopens, the closure area between Ross Dam Trailhead (MP 134) and Porcupine Creek (MP 156) remains an active construction zone.
No public access is permitted within the closure area, including:
Cyclists
Hikers
Campers
Other recreational users
WSDOT has emphasized that crews continue working seven days a week to complete repairs and safely reopen this important transportation corridor.
