Great news for Cascade River Community residents and visitors: SR 20 North Cascades Highway is now fully open in both directions.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reopened the highway on June 14, 2026, following the completion of emergency repairs to rockslide and washout damage that had closed portions of the roadway this spring.

The reopening comes ahead of WSDOT's previously announced timeline and nearly three weeks before its original goal of reopening before the Fourth of July holiday.

Repairs Completed

Emergency repair work included:

• Stabilizing slopes and clearing rockslide debris near Diablo Lake

• Rebuilding roadway embankments damaged by washouts

• Repairing damaged pavement and shoulders

• Restoring drainage systems and culverts

• Replacing guardrails and safety barriers

Local contractors worked seven days a week to complete the repairs and safely reopen this important transportation corridor.

Please Watch for Wildlife

Drivers are reminded to use caution while traveling through the North Cascades.

WSDOT crews have reported numerous sightings of deer, bears, and young wildlife near the roadway. After months without regular vehicle traffic, animals may be more likely to be on or near the highway.

Please drive attentively, obey posted speed limits, and watch for wildlife throughout the corridor.
